課程概述

This course examines new trends in the study of the prewar/wartime and colonial period concerning music and culture in Japan and Korea. Advances in critical studies of the relationship between culture, history and politics have been noticeable in recent years. More studies have been engaging in postcolonial issues regarding the Japanese imperial career and its cultural effects. Particularly in the field of historical media studies including popular music, film, radio etc., these tendencies are clear. Running through a broad overview of relevant literature, this course looks into the cultural dimensions of Japanese colonialism in its ambiguous relationship with modernity in Korea and Japan.

課程目標
This course aims to look into recent studies concerning Japan and Korea as a resource with which to build up comparative and relational studies of colonialism and modernity concerning music in East Asia. It will seek for new perspectives, methods and sources to explore and understand one of the most complicated periods in East Asian history. Whenever possible, the instructor will introduce primary sources, audio materials and references so that students can pursue any of the interested topics further.
課程要求
Language Proficiency:
Since relevant studies in other languages are relatively limited in number, students are expected to tackle readings written in Japanese and less in Korean together with English references whenever available. With the instructor’s occasional help, students are supposed to try hard to read the foreign texts in advance for class discussion.

Assignments:
1. Every week two students are responsible for summarizing two required readings respectively and leading the week’s class discussion. Presentation materials such as a draft or a ppt file should be sent to the instructor and the teaching assistant (TA) no later than one day before each class. The TA will make their copies in advance. Students can effectively utilize audio-visual materials on their presentations.
2. Class presentation at the end of the semester. All students are going to talk directly with the instructor to clarify a topic. A consulting schedule and relevant procedures to be announced in detail around the midterm period.
3. 5 - 10-page term paper based on class presentation. Due by 6/23 by email or by hand.
